1689 Antique Baroque Double Hemisphere World Map

An exceptional piece of Dutch Golden Age cartography: this double hemisphere world map, "Terrarum Orbis Tabula," was engraved in Amsterdam in 1689 by Gerard van Schagen, in the elaborate tradition of contemporaries like Frederick de Wit and Justus Danckerts. Beyond the two main hemispheres, the composition is framed with an extraordinary allegorical border — mythological figures, scenes of war and conquest, and astronomical diagrams including both geocentric and Copernican models of the solar system, with the four classical elements (fire, air, earth, water) personified in the corners.

At over 335 years old, this is a genuine piece of 17th-century decorative cartography — hand-colored copper engraving in its original form — restored here with the ornate detail and period palette fully intact.
