Berghaus Star Map 1880 Antique World Map

A genuine cartographic oddity: this striking five-pointed star map uses the Berghaus star projection, developed by German cartographer Hermann Berghaus in 1879 and published in atlases shortly after. Centered on the North Pole, the design splits the southern hemisphere into five triangular lobes radiating outward — a projection so distinctive it was later adopted into the official logo of the American Association of Geographers in 1911.

This isn't a novelty reproduction; it's a genuine piece of 19th-century cartographic experimentation, made in the era when mapmakers were still actively exploring new ways to flatten the globe. Restored from the antique original, preserving the soft period palette of sage green, rose, and gold.
