1943 Uncle Sam WWII Recruitment Poster

Issued in 1943 by the U.S. Office of War Information as poster No. 78 in its "loose lips sink ships" security campaign, this piece was designed by Mexican-born, naturalized-American illustrator Leon Helguera — one of the era's most prolific commercial artists, who also created OWI posters aimed at Spanish-speaking Americans on the home front. The image proved surprisingly controversial: a Congressman later accused the OWI of designing Uncle Sam's face to resemble President Roosevelt, sparking a real political dispute over wartime propaganda and partisanship that made its way into the Congressional record.
