1948 KLM Retro Airline KLM World Route Map
Designed by Jan Menting in 1948 for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines' "Winter 1948–49" promotional edition, this route map blends Art Deco and Bauhaus influences — reflecting Menting's early design training — into a striking pastel-toned view of the world seen from above the clouds. Bold red route lines radiate from KLM's Amsterdam hub outward across Europe, Africa, the Americas, and especially the airline's extensive Indonesian and Southeast Asian network, illustrated with small pictorial vignettes representing each region.
Only a handful of catalogued examples of this specific edition are known to survive today, making it a genuinely rare piece of postwar commercial aviation design.
